Founder, Director & Qualified Educator

Alex is the founder of Nature's Den, and is also the head educator at the Brookby programme, run on Fridays. The rest of the week he works as a special education teacher at a local school.

Alex is a qualified ECE teacher, having gained a Bachelor of Teaching, majoring in Early Childhood Education. He has worked in the ECE sector for over 7 years, including centres throughout South Auckland and Cambridge. Through this varied work experience, he has picked up a wealth of knowledge in Early Childhood Education and it is these experiences that have led to his vision for Nature’s Den.

Alex feels blessed to be able to help local tamariki to unlock their potential in a natural learning environment.

Alex’s wife Dani is the admin guru at Nature's Den. She assists Alex with the admin side of the business and also works full-time in sales and marketing.

Dani has a 4-year Bachelor of Management Studies majoring in Marketing under her belt. She has worked in a variety of administrative and marketing roles over the past 7 years, which has helped to expand her knowledge on how to run a successful business. She also has experience with children, having worked on-and-off as a babysitter and nanny for the past 10 years.

Dani believes strongly in the importance of nature-based learning and developing strong individual relationships.

Deirdre is one of our amazing educators who you will find at both programmes, and is the head educator at the Pukekohe programme.

Deirdre is a qualified and registered primary school teacher who also has a Diploma in Outdoor Recreation Leadership. She worked in the outdoor industry for almost 5 years before studying to be a teacher, which she has been for 10 years now.

The combination of these qualifications and experiences have shown Deirdre the importance of experiential learning. She believes the outdoors and child-led exploration have so much to teach us about the skills we need to live our best lives. Through nature we can learn our strengths, develop our weaknesses, grow through social interactions and strengthen our core values.

Deirdre has two young children, aged 7 and 5 years old. Since having children of her own she has become even more inspired to see an increase in the opportunities students have to include nature, outdoor and environmental education in their learning journey.

Heidi is our other awesome educator who can also be found at both of our programmes.

Heidi has over 15 years of tutoring, training and teaching experience, from leading nature trails with pre-schoolers to teaching yoga classes to senior citizens.

Originally from Cornwall in England, Heidi has a psychology degree and is a qualified teacher. Heidi has a six-year-old daughter and they both have a love for the outdoors and have completed many tramps within New Zealand.

Heidi actively practises yoga, mindfulness and meditation. She believes these skills help keep her grounded in today’s busy society and enjoys sharing these skills with others.

Heidi believes she has been blessed having an upbringing within nature and feels the benefits nature offer are essential for the wellbeing of our future generations.
